This book is a 'must have' for any aspiring or fledgling investigator. It is also a delightful and informative read for a civilian CSI fan such as myself. Tony Latham has drawn from his many years as a game warden and instructor for Idaho Fish and Game to create a clearly organized and concise instruction manual that covers the most important and useful techniques for investigating wildlife (or human) crime scenes. It is a valuable contribution to the literature available for investigative work, especially since 'Game wardens investigate more crimes involving firearms than any other type of police officer', a point he makes in the book's preface. The book is divided into 5 logical sections that are interspersed with illustrative photographs. The first section deals with analyzing fired casings by both class and individual characteristics. The second section describes the relationship between barrel rifling characteristics and the bullets they produce. This section is full of helpful hints such as using a caliper to measure the land and groove widths of a distorted bullet to determine its diameter, the use of silly putty in barrel examination, and testing your metal detector first before spending hours searching for a bullet in the grass. He describes the analysis of external ballistic evidence in section 3, from examining bullet tracks and trajectory evidence to looking at wound characteristics. The book concludes with two sections dealing with how to find and use the FBI Forensic Lab firearm evidence database (GRC database) and identifying which essential tools and resources to use. Throughout the book the author makes the point that none of these techniques are intended to replace the work of the forensics lab, which produces the evidence admissable in court. However, using these techniques, especially when carried out in front of the suspected perpetrator, often results in a more timely confession, thus reducing the time and expense of additional lab work and court fees. Tony Latham's style is straightforward and easy to understand, while being spiced with his understated sense of humor. I recommend all aspiring investigators begin their training by studying this book. All I can say is WOW! In my opinion this is the best and most comprehensive book on ballistics for field investigators ever written. Tony Latham has done a terrific job in providing an invaluable resource for law enforcement officers who need to develop evidence quickly and accurately. I was there when Tony took the modeling clay from his pocket and inserted it into the barrel of the young hunter who was a witness in our felony moose case. I was quite relieved when Tony examined the clay and concluded our suspect was someone else. Later that night relief turned to excitement as our suspect confessed to shooting the moose after he was confronted with the clay impression of his gun's barrel. You will have to read this book to learn the rest of this story and how Tony has helped natural resource officers across the country quickly solve wildlife crimes using his techniques.
I have known the author for more years than we each care to admit. He is a leader in wildlife crime scene investigation. His desire is to share his skills and knowledge with the next generation of crime fighters to assist them in becoming more effective and efficient. I recommend this book be part of every law enforcement reference library.
As a Conservation Oficer for twenty years and now a college instructor in a conservation law enforcement degree program for the past nine, I can't recommend this book strongly enough to those officers who are dealing with wildlife investigations on a day to day basis. The information contained in this book could literally make the difference between a successful career and one that is full of frustration. How many times has an officer looked at a pile of empty casings in a goose blind and assumed there was only one shooter. Or how many times have we come across an illegal deer kill site and found a number of "identical" shell casings that could have lead us to more than one suspect? Hypothetical questions for sure, but in looking back at my career I am confident that had I known the techniques outlined by Tony, I would have had much better information that I could have used to gain confessions from suspects.
An officer can use techniques in this book to match a spent bullet found in a carcass to a suspect rifle. (S)he can even take information gained from these techniques to determine a list of possible suspect weapons, and as Tony tells in one story, using some deductive reasoning, can further whittle the number of possible suspect weapons down to a very few in most cases.
I learned these techniques in May, 2010 at a wildlife field forensics seminar I attended. I did a bit of research to clarify some questions I had, and I can say that I am absolutely convinced that any officer using even one of these techniques will become a much more professional and a much more successful officer. I am teaching these techniques to all of my students who will be Conservation Officers one day.
Wildlife enforcement takes a huge step forward with this book. I strongly urge you to read it.
If you are interested in firearms and identifying weapons, this is the book to read. I did find it confusing in parts. The author does a good job of trying to use explanations everyone can understand. It's difficult sometimes not to jargon, but he does the best he can given the specifics of guns and the evidence that comes with it. If you are a CSI fan, then this will help you understand what they are saying about ballistic evidence. The author does help you understand through the use of examples with pictures to assist in your understanding. This is a book to help with interests in firearms or evidence.
