Carolina Israelite is brilliant and has enlightened my views on many things surrounding Civil Rights. Through the unbiased scope of Kimberly Hartnett, we see Harry Golden painted in a kind, humorous and brutally honest picture. The writing keeps me engaged from start to finish which is refreshing. Usually I find biographies are not my cup of tea. It is no fault of the writer or the topic, I just don't find it interesting. This book is that exception that I am happy to have. I'll admit, the title caught my eye, and with a little further investigation, my curiosity forced me to add this book to my cart. I don't always like to admit when my curiosity was right, but in the case of this book, it absolutely was.The only thing I can criticize, except it isn’t really criticism, is that I bet there were many, many other stories that didn’t quite make the cut for the book. Kimberly’s writing of Harry Golden makes me want to hunt down every morsel of his life.
I'm not usually a review-writer and it certainly is not a profession of mine. However, if a person finds their curiosity piqued by this book, you won't regret the reading of it. While I am recommending, I also recommend setting up a comfortable lawn chair outside in the sun (or in the shade if you prefer), having a tall glass of sun tea, and reading this book. It would be hard to find a better day!

To many, Harry Golden was a constant thorn in the side, from diehard segregationists to the elitist Jewish establishment. He garnered friends and enemies on both sides of the political and social spectrum, and was not averse to stretching the truth or cutting corners, legal and otherwise, which even landed him a stint in the pen. But as author Kimberly Marlowe Hartnett so eloquently and poignantly portrays, Golden was a man of the highest principle. He stood up for the downtrodden and persecuted in the face of criticism, ridicule and personal danger on issues—racism, poverty, immigration, homophobia, politics, bigotry—as timely today as they were in the mid-twentieth century, when Golden voiced his heartfelt and erudite opinions in the Carolina Israelite, his many books and lectures. One would be hard put to find a personage of some importance—Carl Sandburg, Adai Stevenson, Martin Luther King, John Kennedy, just to name a handful—who did not know Golden nor was influenced in one way or the other by what he said and did.
Golden’s story touches on so many aspects of modern American history that one cannot read Hartnett’s brilliantly written account without having acquired a fresh, new perspective on how we’ve arrived to where we are today on so many important issues. It’s a history lesson that goes down like milk and honey, owing to the deft and facility of the writer to describe Golden’s life and experiences always in the context of the bigger picture, and with a glib sense of humor that often rivals that of her subject.
I may be the only reviewer to say that I've read this book four times - three of them before publication. And I loved it every time.
This is even more remarkable because I'm not a biography reader, at all. I've probably read four biographies before this one.
So if you are like me, don't let the "biography" label put you off. This is an engrossing and entertaining book that, because of the terrific writing, brings to life the decades of Golden's life. History is made up of characters such as Golden, and by getting to know him you'll understand America so much better. I was constantly exclaiming over details and descriptions that were a surprise to me.
And know Golden you will - his humor, his street smarts, his vanity, his failings and his righteousness - all somehow bound up in this wonderful story of his life, and American life. And you will, moreover, be GLAD that you met him. I really was.
I can attest to the tremendous amount of work that Kimberly Marlowe Hartnett put into researching and writing it. She knows more about Harry Golden than anyone else in the world. Stay tuned - she will be pulling together the "extras" that had to be cut from the book to put on a website dedicated to Harry Golden. (The endnotes, by the way, are also great reading, and will give you a hint of this deep research.)

Any further detail would just be stealing from this wonderful book. So buy it already!
By the way, I have this book in both hardcover and . I like the version a lot because you can tap on the endnote number and read it in context, which is much more fun than flipping back and forth in the pages. (And you will want to refer to both text and endnotes in this book again after you've read it, believe me.) The section of photos are, naturally, better viewed in the hardcover, but they reproduce pretty well in the edition.
So hard to believe it's a first effort in terms of a book publication. An ambiguous and complex character described in clear and often humorous language, recounted in the context and political/social geography of his time. Beautifully done and creatively portrayed, although I swear sometimes it raised more questions in my mind than answers. Having said that, I confess to a mere tangential knowledge of this historical figure prior to reading about him in Hartnett's book.
The information in Carolina Israelite is engaging, and I enjoyed the time I spent reading it.. I enthusiastically recommend it to biography junkies, Jewish history buffs, and those interested in the era in which this interesting man lived and held sway. .
